Homemade Gluten Free Onion Soup Mix

Years ago I made the switch…. Before buying anything at the store, I first look around my kitchen to see if I could make it with ingredients that I had. That has saved me so much money on my grocery bill and you would be surprised at how many things you already have the ingredients for right in your kitchen! This gluten free onion soup mix is a perfect example.

Not only does this save you money but the ingredients you use will be better for you as well. A lot of times the grocery store items have fillers and ingredients you don’t necessarily need. By making them yourself you are eliminating that and getting a healthier product in the end.

For years I have used Lipton’s onion soup mix in different recipes. But if you look at the ingredient list, it could contain wheat. Which means it is not gluten free. I can’t believe I didn’t know this before. My mom always used it growing up so I never questioned it as an adult. Lesson learned.

I knew I needed to make a homemade version with simple ingredients that was both healthier and gluten free. The good news is, this gluten-free onion soup mix recipe is so good that you wouldn’t even know the difference in your recipes.

I love when I can nail down a copycat recipe that tastes the same or even better.

gluten free onion soup mix in a jar with pinterest words

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup beef bouillon powder (store bought or homemade)
  • 1 1/2 cup dried onion flakes
  • 8 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp celery seed
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (regular paprika will work fine)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp parsley flakes
  • 1/2 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt

How to make gluten free onion soup mix:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a jar.
  2. Mix well and store in an airtight container, such a mason jar with a lid and ring.
  3. If a recipe calls for a packet of onion soup mix, use 3 tablespoons of this homemade gluten free onion soup mix.

Our favorite way to eat this gluten free onion soup mix is mixed into 8 ounces of sour cream for a french onion dip! You can dip some veggies or even potato chips for a nice treat. Make a large batch of it and bring to your next backyard BBQ or gathering to share with friends.

Another great way is to do a beef roast and sprinkle some of this gluten free onion soup mix over the top. Add in some caramelized onions too. It seasons up real nice and you end up with the most flavorful pot roast in the end for dinner!

This copycat Lipton onion soup mix is so versatile and can be used in many recipes.

How to make homemade beef bouillon powder.

The main ingredient in this homemade version is beef bouillon powder. If you are like me, I try and stay away from it. I like to be in control of the salt content and the ingredients.

Did you know that you can make your own bouillon powder at home using good ingredients? It is fairly simple, you just need time. It is not a quick project.

You will need a pot and a dehydrator to make this bouillon powder at home. I love my Denali Canning dehydrator The Beast! The Beast comes with one fruit leather mat, which you will need to make the powder.

The first step is you will want to get yourself a pot of healthy immune boosting bone broth made. You can do this with beef broth or chicken broth.

Next, you will need to pop your bone broth in the fridge for 12-24 hours. I usually do it over night. I do this step whether I am canning the broth or dehydrating it to turn it into bouillon powder. This will allow the fat to hard on the top and you can easily skim it off.

After you have skimmed off your fat, you will want to pour however much broth you want to turn into bouillon powder into a heavy bottomed pot. Make sure to start with a good amount as you will boil it down and what you end up with is a lot less. Turn your stove onto medium high heat and bring it to a rolling boil. You will let it boil until it starts to thicken. This can take hours.

Once it reduces to half, pour it into a small or medium saucepan. Continue to boil and stirring occasionally until it gets thick like a syrup.

Dehydrate your broth.

Once it forms a skin on the top, you know it is ready for the dehydrator. Using a spatula spread the syrup broth onto a fruit leather sheet fitted for your dehydrator. Turn your dehydrator on and set it to 155 degrees. It takes about 24 hours in the dehydrator to become dry.

It should be completely dry and brittle. Now take it out of the dehydrator and place in a high powered blender. Blend up until a smooth powder. Store in a glass jar on your shelf.

If you want to make it back into a broth, use 1 tsp to 1 cup of hot water or just sprinkle some of the powder into dishes that needed some added flavor!

Gluten free onion soup mix is easy to make and delicious.

This gluten free twist to the classic recipe for onion soup is such an easy recipe to have on your shelf. You won’t even think twice about throwing it together.

Once you make the decision to switch your mind from buying everything at the store, to making what you can, it really doesn’t seem so hard. You really start to wonder, “wow how much money have I wasted all these years basically buying the packaging, when I could have made it at home!”

Making your own mixes at home is a great place to start.
