Making your own homemade seasonings is so easy and so much more affordable! Making your own homemade garlic salt is delicious and you likely have everything you need right in your own kitchen!

Years ago when I first got started on my health journey, I set out to make as much of my own foods as I could. Every time I was out of something I would think, “can I make this at home or do I need to go buy more?”

This way of thinking saved me so many times from running to the grocery store for something quick that I ran out of.

Like this homemade garlic salt.

The first time I made it, I couldn’t believe how simple it was. Plus I had everything I needed right in my kitchen!

Why is it cheaper to make your own rather than buy it?

I have been asked, how is this cheaper it only costs a couple bucks for store-bought garlic salt?

I buy all my spices in bulk. Which means I have a 5 gallon bucket of sea salt, a quart size jar of garlic powder, and a half gallon jar of dried parsley (that I grew myself).

Over time a couple bucks adds up when you have all the ingredients you need right in your own spice cabinet and can whip up a batch every time you need. This is such an easy recipe!

Can you use your own garlic powder?

Right now I am buying my garlic powder in bulk, either at my local bulk food store or on Azure Standard. Make sure to check out how I grocery shop in bulk monthly to find out what Azure Standard is.

We go through a lot of fresh garlic, and last year I only got a couple bulbs from my garden because my dogs dug everything up unfortunately. So I didn’t have any to spare to turn into homemade garlic powder.

But I do have plans to eventually take my extra garlic from the garden, dehydrate them in my excalibur dehydrator, and blender them up into a powder to make my own homemade garlic powder.

Simple steps to make DIY garlic powder:

  1. take fresh cloves of garlic, remove the skins, and lay them in a single layer on your food dehydrator tray. Dehydrate at 125 degrees for 8-10 hours. Be prepared for your house to smell like garlic!
  2. Place your dehydrated garlic cloves in a blender and blend into a fine powder
  3. Store in an airtight container until ready to use.

Storing homemade garlic salt.

Most store-bought ingredients have some sort of anti-caking agent, however in this recipe we are not using one. Which means there is a small chance your garlic salt could get clumps, although the salt helps keep all the moisture out really well.

If this happens simply shake vigorously or use a spoon to break them up before using. If you prefer to add a small amount of cornstarch or arrowroot powder to help with it not caking, you can, although I don’t find it’s necessary. I usually don’t have a problem with it sticking together.

I love to store all my spices in mason jars with a nice chalk label on them. I always store with a ring and a lid so that it is an airtight jar. You want to make sure that your garlic salt is in a dry place so that moisture doesn’t get in.

I usually get a lot of comments on Instagram over my spice shelves in my kitchen. They are definitely a favorite of mine and so many others!

If you have a bottle of store-bought garlic salt right now, you can save the bottle. These store-bought bottles are great to re-purpose and store your homemade version in because they have a nice cap that snaps into place to keep out any moisture. Any extra spice jars will do for storing just as long as they are airtight.

Ingredients for a small batch of fresh garlic salt:

  • 3/4 cup sea salt, you can use kosher salt but it will be a milder salty taste. Different types of salt can also be a great option. You just want to make sure it is a good quality salt.
  • 1/4 cup garlic powder
  • 1/8 cup dried parsley

Easy way to make your own garlic salt:

  1. Add all ingredients to a pint size mason jar or a old store-bought bottle.
  2. Place your lid and ring on or cap and shake vigorously so that all your ingredients mix nicely.
  3. Sprinkle garlic salt on all your favorite dishes!

This easy recipe is great because you can double or even triple this and make a big batch so you don’t have to make up garlic salt for months!

Some of our favorite uses for this homemade garlic salt:

I love to use our homemade garlic salt in any dish to season it up. It gives a nice garlic yet salty flavor.

  • Cheesy Potatoes
  • Salad Dressings
  • Soups
  • Stews

These are just a few of the things we use our homemade garlic salt for. Garlic salt is a staple on our spice rack.

Come spend a morning with us on the ranch!

Another great idea for this homemade garlic salt is to give it as a gift. This garlic salt would make a great gift for a hostess or housewarming present. Simply put it in a jar with a tag and ribbon!

In my opinion, homemade garlic salt tastes better then the store-bought version. It has a definite intense flavor!

The next time you run out of garlic salt, don’t add it to your grocery list. Whip up a batch right there in your own kitchen and be amazed at how delicious and easy it is!

Excellent, I love garlic salt but I didn’t have any on hand. I was going to just mix garlic and salt but glad I came here. I ended up tossing mine in the food processor and the parsley blended in instead if floating to the top.
