Is your family ranch lovers like we are? I am not talking cattle ranch (although we are that kind of ranch lovers too!) but I am talking ranch dressing. This shelf stable ranch powder mix, makes mixing up a batch of ranch a breeze.
We use ranch as salad dressing, on cheddar ranch pizza, or just as a dip for our veggies. I seem to always have a mason jar made up of ranch in the fridge for when we need it.
I love to cook from scratch. But what I love more is having my good food be convenient. That means I like to have things made and ready to go so I can make something quick whenever I need it.
This shelf stable ranch powder mix is perfect, because it has a long shelf life and 1 batch of the dry powder lasts a long time! I have had a jar of the powder mix on my shelf for longer then 6 months.
I wanted a powder already ready to go, so that I could easily just throw it together when needed. One where you just add mayonnaise and sour cream with some powder and you have ranch in minutes.
This shelf stable ranch powder mix was the perfect solution. I make up a big jar of it and keep it right on my shelf. When we are in need of some ranch, I can have a small jar of ranch dressing in no time!
Let’s talk about ingredients.
This easy recipe calls for simple ingredients that you will find you probably already have. There are a lot of dried herbs in this recipe, some salt, garlic and onion powder, a tad bit of sugar, with the key ingredient being dry buttermilk powder.
So what exactly is dry buttermilk powder? Well, if you were to just make up a batch of ranch, and buy a store-bought packet of ranch, you would like use buttermilk with some sour cream and mayonnaise. Since we are making shelf staple ranch powder mix we need to make the ingredients shelf staple.
Dry buttermilk is dehydrated buttermilk and then blended into a fine powder. This is just like a dry milk powder. The best part about having this on hand, it can rescue you in a pinch when you need buttermilk to bake with and you ran out!
I buy all my ingredients, including my dry buttermilk, in bulk on Azure Standard. Make sure to check out my post on How I Grocery Shop Monthly on Azure Standard.
If you can’t find dry powdered buttermilk, you can use just dry milk powder. I have done that in a pinch, but I prefer the buttermilk powder because it gives that buttermilk tang.
Ingredient:
- 1 cup dry buttermilk powder
- 2 TBSP dried parsley flakes
- 2 tsp dried minced onions
- 2 tsp dried dill weed
- 2 tsp Garlic Salt
- 2 tsp onion powder
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp white sugar
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
How to make shelf stable ranch powder mix:
- Put all ingredients in a mason jar, place the cap on, and shake well. Store in an air tight container in your spice cabinet out of direct sunlight, until ready to use.
- When ready to make a batch of ranch dressing, add 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1/2 cup of sour cream, splash of milk, and 2-3 TBSP of the dry mix. Mix well and serve. Add more or less milk to make it the right consistency for what you need it for. I tend to do less milk for a veggie dip to keep the ranch thick and a little more milk for dressing to make it runnier.
- Once you have a batch of ranch mixed up, store it in the fridge with a mason jar and lid for up to 2 weeks!
The beauty of making your own at home is you get to tweak it with different spices to get the great taste you love. There are many different ways to get that great ranch taste, so add or remove spices and herbs to your liking.

I love that you don’t have to run off to your local grocery store every time you are out of ranch. If you are like our family, you go through a lot of ranch. This takes the stress out of always having to have it on my shelf. Plus I know what’s in the ingredients and that is a big deal to me.
