For years I would buy “natural” peanut butter from the store.
You know, the kind that only has 1 ingredient in it…. peanuts.
While my children would eat it and rarely complained, I knew they secretly missed the good ol’ Jiffy I used to buy before our health journey started.

I think what my kids were missing was just a little bit of sweetness. We love peanuts by themselves so it wasn’t the strong peanut taste, it was the lack of sweetness.
However, one thing was certain… I just couldn’t get behind buying the popular brands knowing that they use ingredients I was staying clear of. I knew I needed to find a good peanut butter recipe we could all enjoy, but that also had ingredients worth putting into our diets.
The first time I made this recipe I believe my oldest daughter said, “Mom, this is even better than the peanut butter you used to buy!” My homemade peanut butter better then Jiffy?!? Now that was music to a healthy eating mama’s heart. ❤️
We love to eat it on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, energy balls, or our personal favorite; apples and peanut butter!

In order to make a good smooth peanut butter you will need either a high powdered blender or a food processor. This will help your peanuts to really get smooth.
I have actually never used my food processor for this, although you certainly can. I love to use my Vitamix blender. It is always out on my counter, which makes it convenient, and it really does a nice job getting my peanut butter smooth.
Make sure to practice your patience when making it.
Making your own peanut butter is really rather simple. There is only 4 healthy ingredients and doesn’t require a ton of labor.
But it does require some patience.
In order to get a good smooth consistency you will need to blend for a minute, stop and scrape down the sides. Blend again for a minute and stop to scrape down the sides. You will continue this process, adding in avocado oil as needed, until you get the right consistency.
It may take 4-5 times of stopping and scrapping before the right consistency is obtained.
Be patient and take your time! I promise there is a tasty reward at the end! 😉
You can make it crunchy and not creamy with one simple trick.
We love to eat creamy peanut butter. I grew up on it and that’s what my daughters have only ate.
However, I do know there are those of you out there that like it crunchy.
In order to make it crunchy, simply take 1/3 cup of the peanuts, after you have baked them, and blend them for about 30 seconds. You don’t want them to puree just to chopped into smaller chunks.
If you are using a food processor, simply pulse them about 5 times to slightly chop them up.
Take those peanut out of the blender and add them back in once you have the rest of the peanut butter made.
Ingredients:
- 4 cups of dry roasted peanuts
- 2-4 TBSP avocado Oil (start with 1 or 2 TBSP and add as needed)
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 2 TBSP honey
Directions:
- First you want to take your peanuts and lay them in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 3 minutes. Shake the peanuts and bake another 3 minutes. Watch closely so they don’t burn! You may not need to go the full 3 minutes after shaking.

- Add peanuts and 1 to 2 TBSP avocado oil to a high powered blender or food processor. Blend for 1 minute. Stop and scrape down the sides.
- Add another TBSP of avocado oil if needed and blend again for 1-2 minutes. Stop and scrape down the sides. Continue this process until your peanut butter is almost smooth and just a little gritty.
- Add in salt and honey and blend again until smooth. If making crunchy peanut butter add the chopped peanuts in at this point.
- Store in a glass container in your fridge until ready to use! Keeps for about 2-4 weeks in the fridge however I have kept it in the fridge longer.

This slightly sweet nutty peanut butter is the best on toast, on sandwiches, or even with just some apples as a snack!

I buy my dry roast peanuts and my avocado oil in bulk on Azure Standard. I like to use local raw honey that I buy from a local Mennonite store, however I have bought my honey on Azure as well and it was delicious!
