Why make spice blends or seasoning blends at home?
Years ago every time I was out of a spice blend, I would just add it to my grocery list. It never even crossed my mind to make my own. Enter in my health journey that started 6 years ago and now I am constantly thinking about what other seasoning mix can I make.
Some of my favorite recipes to make at home are garlic salt, taco seasoning, and seasoned salt. It just makes sense to make my own seasoning blends at home.
I buy all my bulk individual spices on Azure Standard, so I always have all that I need to whip something up. This saves me a good amount of money because I want those individual spices anyways for my shelf. I might as well use them to make more things!
Basically I came to the realization that I was spending an extra cost on the packaging of those seasoning blends from the grocery store, when I can do it myself at home.
Another big reason for me is the fillers. Have you ever looked at the back of a spice blends ingredients list? You likely will find some sort of anti-caking agent and most times sugar as well. I still can’t figure out why sugar is necessary in garlic salt? But most brands add it.
As you all know I prefer ingredients in their rawest form. So making a blend and adding different fillers into it, doesn’t sit well with me.
For that reason, I like to make my own.
The next time you are out of a spice blend, try making your own before running to the store.
Ingredients:
- 4 TBSP brown sugar
- 2 TBPS ground sage
- 2 tsp sea salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 2 tsp thyme
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- red pepper flakes (optional and to taste if you want a spicier blend)
How to make sausage spice blend:
- Add all dry ingredients to a mason jar with a lid and ring or a small bowl. Cap the jar and shake well to make sure everything is mixed. If doing it in a small bowl, make sure to mix it well with a spoon so everything is evenly mixed.
- Store in that airtight container on your pantry shelf. Use on any ground meat that you want to taste like breakfast sausage.
How much sausage spice blend to add to meat?
This really depends on your liking. If I’m being honest I never measure anything. I just sprinkle a good amount over all the meat. I like the taste of a good breakfast sausage! Since this homemade breakfast sausage blend uses whole ingredients I don’t mind really using a good amount.
If I had to guess, I would say about 1.5-2 TBSP for a pound of meat. But add to your liking!
I will say that if you only use a little bit you won’t get the real sausage taste. This works with all ground meat if you use a good amount.
My girls squawk if anything is too spicy so rest assured this is not a spicy blend. Although it does have a good amount of sage. We really like the taste of sage!
Best way to store sausage spice blend.
The best way to store your sausage spice blend is in a cool dark place, like your pantry shelf. You want to make sure you have your blend in an airtight container.
This will keep it fresh for longer. I like to store mine in a mason jar with a lid and ring. I keep it in my pantry so it is ready to use whenever needed!
Now that you have your sausage spice blend made up, grab some pounds of ground meat and make some for your family. The great flavor will have them asking for more every morning!
