The holiday season is coming up! Having DIY gift ideas this time of year in your back pocket makes gift giving a breeze. Here are my best homemade gifts in a jar to give to friends and family during anytime of the year.

Just a little something to say, “I’m thinking of you and I love you!”

Since I am always swimming in mason jars, what better way than to make mason jar gifts with them. It’s a great way to use what you have on hand.

You can use mason jars for so many things. I have made gifts of lotions, lip balm, candles, and even canned jams and ready made meals to give to people.

But these mason jar homemade gifts are simple and you may be surprised with how much of the ingredients you have in your home. These are simple recipes to throw in a mason jar with a cute tag and ribbon, and you have a little gift to give to anyone!

Items you need to make the gifts?

I love using the things that I have to make a cute gift to send to someone. In my opinion homemade gifts are some of the best! When someone takes the time to think of you and make a gift for you, it just does says something different then running to the store grabbing a gift.

I always have plenty of pint mason jars and quart mason jars lying around. A glass jar is so versatile and can be used for so many things. They especially make for a perfect gift size!

They are pretty all on their own so they need very minimal decorating to make them a gift. These DIY mason jar gift ideas are perfect to make up on whim and have ready to give as a hostess gift, a homemade Christmas gift, or even just an “I’m thinking of you gift”.

I love to use a red butte twine as my ribbon, it gives it a rustic homestead feel. Add a tag onto your jars with instructions and a nice saying. Now get your jar recipes together for your edible gifts and you will have the perfect gift to give to anyone!

Gift #1:

Chili and Cornbread: Dinner in a jar

This is so easy to throw together, its incredibly cheap, and it stores really well since it is just dry ingredients in the jar. 

Nothing says I love you like providing a meal for someone. I can’t think of a better hostess gift! A favorite food of ours is chili and cornbread so this would be much appreciated in our house!

I have done this where I bring a canned soup that I had home canned, but this is a perfect gift for anyone. This is an easy gift idea, even for those that don’t like to can!

Chili Ingredients:

  • 1 wide mouth quart jar
  • ribbon, tag/label
  • 2 TBSP minced dried onion
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup chili powder
  • 2 TBSP dried parsley
  • 1 TBSP dried oregano
  • 1 cup dried kidney beans
  • 1 cup dried black beans
  • 1 cup died pinto beans
  • 2 TBSP cumin

Add your onion flakes and garlic powder to a small bowl. In another small bowl add you parsley and oregano.

Layer the ingredients in this order, making sure to press each layer down before adding the next. Don’t jostle your jar too much so you keep the nice layers for a pretty presentation!

  1. kidney beans
  2. onion flake/garlic mixture
  3. pinto beans
  4. black beans
  5. chili powder
  6. parsley/oregano mixture
  7. cumin

On your tag make sure to give full instructions on how to cook their chili. They will also need 2lbs ground beef, 3 quarts of stock, 2 large tomatoes diced, 1 8oz can of tomato paste, and salt and pepper to taste.

Cornbread Ingredients:

  • 1 wide mouth pint size mason jar
  • ribbon and tag/label
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 TBSP baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup white sugar

In a small bowl add you flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix to combine.

Layer your ingredients in this order, making sure not to jostle your jar too much so you keep the layered effect,

  1. flour mixture
  2. cornmeal
  3. sugar

On your tag make sure to give full instructions on how to bake their cornbread to go with their chili. They will also need 2 eggs, 1/4 cup honey, 1 cup milk, 1/2 stick butter melted.

Gift #2:

Hot cocoa powder mix

This gift idea is a simple recipe and the perfect sweet treat for all the kiddos in your life. I don’t know a child yet that doesn’t love a nice warm cup of hot chocolate. This mix will please not only the kids but the parents as well as it is a healthy version of hot cocoa! Homemade mixes are the perfect gift to give.

Add in some fun items like marshmallows, chocolate chips, or even a peppermint candy stick for a tasty treat. It definitely makes this gift extra special with some add ins.

Hot Cocoa Mix Ingredients:

  • 1 pint sized jar
  • ribbon and tag/label
  • 1 1/2 cups maple sugar, coconut sugar, or brown sugar
  • 3 TBSP + 2 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • dash of salt
  • Add ins of choice: mini marshmallows or mini chocolate chips

Add everything to your jar and give it a good shake to mix. Top with any special treats of choice. Tie a peppermint stick to the outside of your jar with your tag as a great addition.

Gift #3:

All-Purpose Meat Rub

This rub is a great gift idea because it will satisfy whoever the cooker is in your house, husband or wife! Food gifts are the best since it doesn’t matter who is receiving them… everyone has to eat!

This rub is so delicious with a sweet and salty taste but has a little bit of a spice kick.

All-Purpose Meat Rub Ingredients:

  • 1 pint or 2, 1/2 pint size jars
  • ribbon and tag/label
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3 TBSP salt
  • 3 TBSP paprika
  • 3 TBSP chili powder
  • 2 TBSP garlic powder
  • 2 TBSP onion powder
  • 1 TBSP dried oregano
  • 1 TBSP cumin

Add everything into a medium size mixing bowl. Mix well so all the spices are incorporated. Pour into any size mason jar. Don’t forget to add a ribbon and cute tag.

This recipe is great on all types of meat and will last so long because a little bit goes a long ways! All your family members will be raving at how delicious your meat is after using this rub.
