There it was again…. A dirty shower that needed to be cleaned. I am naturally clean person and actually like to clean… well, most days. But cleaning a shower is one of those tasks that I absolutely hate! Luckily this safe and easy shower cleaner makes the job that much easier.

When I started this journey of healthy living, I knew I needed a shower cleaner that was easy to make and even better, easy to use. When I am changing out a product, I am looking for it to be not only safe but effective too. There are so many times a product has clean ingredients but it doesn’t really work. I’m not interested in that.

I wanted something that really packed a punch and left me with a clean shower every time…. but also had very safe ingredients.

I have tried multiple recipes before I found this one. Once I tweaked this recipe to my liking, it became a favorite to use for all my shower cleaning needs. I have been using it for years and it works beautifully.

The best part about this safe and easy shower cleaner is, it is super easy to make and you probably have all of the ingredients!

vinegar, dish soap, spray bottle, and essential oils with a wood background and pinterest words

Ingredient List:

  • ½ cup dish soap or castile soap, I use the Azure Clean brand that I get in bulk on Azure Standard. Make sure it is a liquid soap.
  • 1.5 cups distilled white vinegar
  • 7 drops lemon essential oil (smells good and helps fight the scum)
  • 7 drops of tea tree essential oil (as an antibacterial)
  • Glass squirt bottle

Mixing this safe and easy shower cleaner:

Mix all the ingredients in an empty spray bottle that’s glass and give it a good twirl. I would recommend twirling your mixture around and not shaking too much or your dish soap will get really bubbly. The lemon in this shower cleaner leaves a nice fresh scent while the tea tree oil disinfects.

Now you are ready to use your shower spray and get a nice clean shower.

When you are ready to use.

When you are ready to clean your shower, simply spray your mixture all over the shower and let it sit for about 15-20 min. Than give it a light scrub and rinse it off.

There is no need for any hard scrubbing when you let this solution set. If you have a lot of build-up of soap scum, you may need to scrub a little harder but for the most part, if I do it regularly I don’t need to scrub at all!

I usually spray it about 15 min before I am going to take a shower and than jump on in and scrub the areas that need a little extra scrub power. Let the hot water rinse the rest of it off! I like a good cleaner that I don’t have to use much elbow grease on and it takes minimal effort.

It is very important to use a glass squirt bottle with this mixture because of the essential oils in the recipe. The essential oils will break down a plastic spray bottle. I buy my  glass spray bottles on Amazon.

Another thing to note is I do not use Dawn dish soap in this recipe. Dawn is very good at fighting away scum and grease and if that’s what you use regularly, then it will work fine in this recipe. However, I have been told that it can get very sudsy and hard to rinse away.

I use the Azure Clean brand of dish soap for my every day dishes.  So, I just use this brand in my shower cleaner as well and I have had no problems with it being too sudsy. I love the soft clean scent to it, and it works really well.

Can you smell the vinegar?

Let’s just call out the big elephant in the room here.

We know vinegar has amazing cleaning power. In fact you can clean your entire home with just vinegar and it will do a way better job then any cleaner from the store.

But what about the smell? I don’t know one person who enjoys the smell of vinegar. It has such a sour smell to it, not exactly the scent you are looking for when you are cleaning your home.

I don’t know about you but I am looking for a fresh citrus smell when I clean!

Good news! This vinegar solution won’t leave you with a vinegar smell because of the essential oils. Not only do the essential oils have major cleaning properties to help with buildup but they have a nice scent to them as well to mask the strong smells that the vinegar can put out.

So don’t worry, this powerful cleaning solution won’t leave you needing to open windows to get rid of the horrendous vinegar smell.

Where to buy essential oils from?

You can use any brand of essential oils in this recipe but I will caution you. Not all essential oils are created equal.

You want to make sure you are finding a brand that is from a reputable source so you are getting a good essential oil. Ones that you can buy on Amazon or brands that you have never heard of, most likely are diluted. You don’t want to spend your hard earned money on those.

You want to make sure that you are getting a high powered lemon and tea tree essential oil in your diy shower cleaner so that you can fight those hard water stains and soap scum that everyone gets in the shower. If your essential oils are diluted and not as potent they won’t work as well.

I am a Wellness Advocate for DoTERRA so I buy all my oils from there.

The reason I love their essential oils is because they are sourced and tested purely and with high quality. I know that I am getting a great product when I buy their oils.

They are a company working towards more than just producing great pure essential oils to heal. They are on a mission to helping people and to give back. I love when businesses align both in purity and ethically.

You can use any brand of essential oils in this safe and easy shower cleaner but I urge you to find a reputable source for them.

What other bathroom surfaces can I spray this on?

This safe and easy shower cleaner doesn’t have to be used just in your shower area. I love a good natural nontoxic option that can be used for various surfaces. A one-stop shop…. yes please!

This spray is also great as toilet cleaners as well. Just spray the solution on the inside of your toilet. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes and then use a scrub brush to scrub around the sides of the bowl.

One thing to remember when using this spray for other surfaces is you will want to rinse it off with water. Since you are using soap in the spray you don’t really want the soap to sit and dry without being rinsed off. So think of areas with water to use it. A shower, tub, toilet, and sink are all great places.

If you are looking for just an all purpose cleaner, try just doing vinegar, water, and essential oils. This makes a great all purpose cleaner!

Now that you have the ingredients, lets ditch the harsh chemicals in a store bought shower cleaner and get this best homemade shower cleaner made up and ready to use.
