Homemade gluten free raviolis are a family favorite around here.
My girls and husband love raviolis! But since the girls and I have to eat gluten free, I just don’t buy them from the store. The sore-bought gluten free raviolis are really expensive for about 7 to a pack. I would have to buy 4 bags to feed just the girls and I!
So I decided, why not make them. I mean how hard could it be??
I already had a tried and true homemade gluten-free pasta recipe, why not just turn that pasta dough into a gluten-free ravioli?
All I needed to do now was figure out a filling recipe and I was set. I like to use simple ingredients like my homemade whole milk ricotta cheese and sometimes I use my homemade mozzarella cheese in this recipe. You can really use anything you like to make up a filling!
The great thing about this recipe is you can grab a child to help you, to make the job go faster, and you can make a bunch ahead of time and freeze them for later. That makes a quick and easy dinner on a busy night.
My girls get so excited to help in the kitchen, especially when they are getting gluten free raviolis in the end!
The first time I made this gluten free ravioli recipe you would have thought I brought a sliver of heaven down for my family. They were a hit and have continued to be for all these years now!
Do I need special equipment to make gluten free raviolis?

You do not need any special equipment, if you choose. A simple rolling pin and well floured surface will do. Although I will warn you, that is more work!
I use the pasta sheet attachment for my Kitchenaid stand mixer. If you don’t have a Kitchenaid, see if there is pasta attachments that go with your brand of stand mixer.
If you don’t have a stand mixer you can just get a hand cranked pasta machine. They don’t move automatically, but its a great project for the kids to help!
The other thing you will need is a ravioli sealer. This will make your seal on your raviolis tight so the filling doesn’t boil out when cooking.
Pasta Ingredients:
- 2 cups gluten free all purpose flour, I like to use my own homemade blend that I shared in my Gluten Free Homestead Pantry E-Book
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 1/2 TBSP olive oil
- 2-4 eggs
- water (if needed)
Filling Ingredients:
- 1/2 lb ground beef
- 3/4 cup ricotta cheese
- 1/2 cup fresh or frozen spinach
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese and/or mozzarella cheese. Feel free to use different kinds of cheese here.
- 1 tsp garlic salt
- 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
*If you want to make gluten free cheese ravioli, do not add the ground beef and add in at least 1 cup of an assortment of cheeses.
Simple steps to make the gluten free homemade pasta:
- Add gluten-free flour, salt, olive oil and 2 eggs to a stand mixer and turn it on. Continue adding 1 small or large egg at a time until your dough starts to form into a large ball of dough. It should not be sticky and easy to work with.
- Let the homemade gluten-free pasta dough rest until ready to roll it out or use right away.
- On a lightly floured work surface, divide dough into 8 equal pieces. Working with one piece at a time, run each piece through the Kitchenaid pasta attachment. Start with the dial on 1 and continue to run each sheet through until you have worked up to dial 4. Your pasta sheet should be about 1/8in thick. You can also use a hand held pasta machine or pasta roller. If you don’t have an attachment or machine simply use a rolling pin on a well floured surface.
- Cut each sheet into even squares or different shapes but I like to keep it simple. I usually cut straight down the middle, horizontally, and then cut vertically to make even squares. You can also use a round cookie cutter or square if you have them or even ravioli cutters, but I find it wastes too much pasta dough, so I don’t use them.
- Dust each square lightly with gluten free all purpose flour and stack up all the squares until you have them all made.
How to make homemade ravioli filling and raviolis:
- Brown your ground beef until cooked through.
- Put you cooked ground beef into a bowl and add all other filling ingredients. Mix it all up well!
- Now take two squares of your gluten free ravioli dough. Place a scoopful of the mixture on one square and top it with the other square. Using a ravioli sealer, run it around all four sides to seal up the ravioli!
- At this point you can cook them right away, in boiling water until they are al dente, or flash freeze them by laying them in a single layer on a cookie sheet to freeze for later use! If you are cooking right away make sure your pot is at a rolling boil before adding the raviolis or they could come apart.
Drain and top your cooked fresh homemade ravioli with your favorite pasta sauce or tomato sauce. We like to use the marinara sauce I can from the tomatoes in my garden. Top with a little shredded parmesan or asiago cheese and you have a delicious meal everyone will love!
These gluten free raviolis are definitely a labor of love, but worth every bit of work. Especially when you get to labor next to and for the people you love.
Just because you have to be gluten free, or you choose to be gluten free, doesn’t mean your meals have to be boring! There are so many ways to make good delicious foods for your family that are healthy and also gluten free!
