Every household needs this…. It’s just something you CANNOT live without! No matter which way you look at it, it’s a product you MUST HAVE.
What is it……………………. LAUNDRY DETERGENT!
Sure, you can run to target and grab any old laundry soap off the shelf. But most laundry soap is so expensive! AND some ingredients are more than likely questionable. Even the “all natural” laundry soaps may not be as all natural as they say they are.
When I started this journey of natural homemaking, I was doing it because I wanted to cure my daughter’s eczema. Since that is a skin issue, I knew that laundry soap was one of the first things that needed to be changed. I came across countless different recipes of laundry soap and tried a ton but none of them quite fit the bill.
You see, our clothes get very very VERY dirty at times. The Rancher comes home daily with all kinds of cattle shenanigans on his clothes and not to mention my free-range children who are always running around outside, without shoes and getting into anything that can get them dirty!
I needed a laundry soap that was gentle enough for my daughters skin, but tough enough to combat the dirt, mud, cow poop, and anything else that winds up on our clothes from the homestead.
Then I found this…. Simple, natural, and effective! All 3 areas that are a MUST HAVE in this homestead.
Natural Powdered Laundry Soap:
- 8 cups Baking Soda
- 6 cups Super Washing Soda
- 2 bars of Castile soap grated (any scent of your choice, but I use 1 lavender and 1 peppermint)
This is so very simple! And if you have a food processor with the cheese grader attachment, it’s even faster!
First, grade both bars of soap in your food processor. If you don’t have one, no sweat, just get out the old handy cheese grader and get to grading! You will get an arm workout and laundry soap all at the same time…. Win win in my eyes!
Next, you will add 8 cups of Baking Soda to your laundry container.
I use and bought this container on Amazon. I love it because my laundry room is in the garage and I love that it is a completely sealed lid.
Then, add the 6 cups of Super washing soda. THIS IS NOT BAKING SODA! You need the washing soda AND the baking soda to get the right fighting power against the yuckies on your clothes.
Lastly add the grated bars of soap to the top. I use a nice hardy wooden spoon to give it as best of a stir as I can and then I simply put the lid on tightly and give it a good shake to incorporate the ingredients all the way.
When your ready to wash, use a ¼ cup of the powder mixture in the bottom of your washer first and then throw your clothes in. Wash as you would any other time. You will be amazed at how well it cleans, and it doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg. Plus, you know it is completely safe and gentle on any skin type because you made it without any of those yucky additives.
I have a top loader washer and have never used it on a front loader. So, if you have a front loader proceed with caution. If you try it and it works wonderful leave a comment! I would love to hear how it worked!
Now let’s talk about these ingredients for a minute so you know why and what your putting into your laundry soap…
Super Washing Soda:
This is a must have ingredient. This is added in to boost the whole laundry detergent. It is meant to get the ground in dirt and grime out of your clothes. It is a natural odor remover that is 100% fragrance and phosphate free. You can find this in the laundry section at Walmart, some grocery stores carry it, or if you’re like me and don’t want to waste time heading to a store only for it not to carry what you want, then just get it on amazon. This is what I usually buy, and it makes a double batch.
Baking Soda:
This ingredient is also rather important. There are so many great uses for baking soda in the household cleaning world and this is another one! Using baking soda in this recipe helps boost your colors or whites while they are washing, is an odor reducer to get rid of any bacteria that is along for the ride on your clothes, and most importantly in my house it softens my water that is used when washing my clothes. I have hard water here at the homestead so using baking soda in my laundry detergent helps balance out the pH levels more effectively. Of course, you can buy baking soda almost anywhere but the best price I have found is at Costco. I buy the large bag there and it lasts me months and months. I think I have made 3 or 4 batches of laundry detergent with the bag I just used up from Costco. But I also use baking soda in other things so the whole bag was not used just for laundry detergent. Very cost effective!
Castile Soap Bars:
This is your soap part of the laundry detergent! If you didn’t already get that… The reason I choose castile soap bars is because they are completely natural, safe, and are made up of ingredients such as palm oil and salt that are gentle on our skins. Most health food stores carry castile soap but they are quite expensive. So…… surprise surprise, I buy them on Amazon! 😊 This is the ones I usually buy because I like to buy more then I need at one time to save money!
Now that you have this safe, natural, easy recipe you can whip up a batch that will last you months and you can get all your laundry needs done and know your skin and bodies will stay safe!

I did some research since I have a HE front load machine and as long as the deterefent doesn’t have a sudsing agent in it it’s safe for HE front loader machine plus you use only 2 Tablespoons of detergent. I’ll be making your detergent this weekend. Thanks for the recipe
Rancherwife
Thank you for your research and sharing with everyone! Castile soap is not sudsy, so this sounds like it will work nicely in front loaders as well!

Great info, it dubs my research
I will also be making detergent this weekend.
Can the detergent be used in cold water wash or better in hot water wash?
Rancherwife
It is better in hot water. It may not completely dissolve in cold water and you will find little clumps. Thanks for asking!
