Essential oils are a part of our every day lives. I use them daily! There are so many different essential oils out there and they can be used in so many ways.
It took me quite some time to get in the habit of grabbing for an oil instead of other things but now it is second nature and I do it with ease. And the funny part is, they can be much more effective than the store-bought stuff in curing or cleaning.
So, I figured it would be beneficial to share my top 5 oils and how I use them! Now before we get started, I just want to be clear, I am not a doctor. I am a mom on a quest to a healthier lifestyle. All the ways I use essential oils are based off of my own research and if you are ever in doubt please consult a doctor.
Now lets get down to the top 5 oils I use daily:
On Guard
I make a roller ball up with On Guard in it to help boost our immune system. I use On Guard, Frankincense, Oregano, and Lemon in my immune boost roller ball. We put this roller ball on every morning while we are eating breakfast.
If I don’t have my immune boost roller ball made up, I will put On Guard directly on myself and the girls as a preventive measure to protect us from getting sick. I put it on our spines and back of our necks in the mornings and if I remember I will put it on the bottom of our feet before bed at night.
During the winter time I will diffuse On Guard into the air throughout the day to help keep our air ready to fight!
You can also put On Guard on apples soaked in water to have a little spicy apple treat while boosting your immune system.
Frankincense
Frankincense is also a great oil for boosting your immune system along with other things! I use this oil in so many ways. The first way is I have it sitting on my nightstand. I put it on my glands every night to keep my immune system strong. I also add this to my immune boost roller ball which goes on myself and the girls.
Frankincense is good for reducing scarring on scraps and cuts. So, I add it into my first aid roller ball that I use on injuries in our house! I add Myrrh, Frankincense, and Lavender to my first aid roller ball.
Peppermint
I like to use peppermint right on my temples for when I have a headache. You need to be careful though because peppermint is a hot oil and will give you a little burning, tingling feeling when you put it on. Be careful not to get it too close to your eyes also. Peppermint oil is a super effective way to kick headaches.
Peppermint is also great for reducing fevers. For low grade fevers such as 99 to 101 I will place peppermint oil on their spine in 15-20 min increments until it brings the body temperature down. I have not found this effective when the girls have a high fever (over 101) so I usually don’t do it during those times.
If you have an ant, spider, or mouse problem peppermint works great at getting rid of them. For spiders and ants, I will make up a spray bottle with a couple other oils that repel them and spray it around as needed. For mice I will drop a couple drops of peppermint oil on cotton balls and keep them under my sink. I usually have to change them out every couple weeks to keep the smell strong. Mice hate the smell of peppermint.
Another great way to use peppermint is in hand creams. I love to make my own hand cream and when I do, I add peppermint oil as a fun scent! I usually like to add peppermint in the winter time for a more Christmas smell.
Lemon
Fresh lemon smell is always so nice. I like to add lemon in all my cleaning products because it is also a great way to combat grease and grime while smelling great! All my all-purpose cleaners have lemon in them. I also use it to dust. I will take a microfiber cloth, get it damp, and add a couple drops of lemon to the towel. Now the girls or I can go around and dust all the furniture and the house will smell so clean!
Another great way to use lemon is to diffuse it to wake you up! Sometimes when one or both of my girls are acting sleepy and not wanting to work during school, I will diffuse some lemon to help them to wake up and focus.
In the summer time I will crave a good lemon water every once in a while. Adding a few drops of lemon to your water gives you that lemon water taste that’s so refreshing without having to have actual lemons in your water!
Anything citrus is also very good at deterring ants and spiders so I will add this into my spray to combat those pesky critters!
Lavender
There are so many uses to Lavender. I know I will miss some of the ways but here are the main ways we use lavender. The first way is straight on the bottom of our feet at night if we are having a hard time falling asleep. This works so well when the kiddos are sick and just needing good restful sleep. It also works well for a stressed-out mama who has a hard time shutting down the brain at night!
Another good use for lavender is on the skin for bug bites and even first aid. It is very calming on the skin and works so well at bringing down the inflammation. I used it with some homemade calendula oil on the girls when they had hand foot and mouth a couple winters ago and it worked wonders. It of course didn’t take it away, but it did great at calming the itching and inflammation of the bumps!
Lavender is such a calming and sweet smell for hand creams and soaps. If you like to make your own like I do, then this is a good scent to add it. It is also very calming on the skin.
If I am feeling anxious and my chest is tight, I will add a couple drops of lavender and rub it right on my chest. It works well in calming the anxious tight feelings in your chest when you are stressed out.
And lastly, I use lavender on my dryer wool balls to dry with our clothes. It gives our clothes a lovely fresh clean scent when they come out of the dryer!
