Finding homemade alternatives to some of our favorite snacks is my favorite. There is just nothing better than making something that I would ordinarily buy and to hear everyone rave about it. These homemade gluten free graham crackers are the perfect snack to start with.
They are simple to make. They use simple ingredients. And the whole family will enjoy this healthy snack.
In our house, I do my very best to not buy processed snacks at the grocery store. Which means I need to be ready with snacks that are not processed for when hunger strikes.
For the most part we do snacks that are fruits and veggies. I also always have popcorn kernels, cheese, and yogurt for everyone to snack on. Check out my list of high protein snacks that I like to keep on hand for quick snacks.
But sometimes I like to have some homemade snacks that everyone loves.
These homemade gluten free graham crackers were one of the first snacks I started making for my girls. Even well before I started this homesteading journey or even learning about our health and what is in our food.
I love this recipe because I have been able to adapt and change it to fit whatever our needs are at the time. The original recipe had ingredients that we stay away from, so I had to adapt it to make it fit and it turned out beautifully.
These homemade graham crackers are perfect to use as a snack dipped in milk, for s’mores around the camp fire, or even as a gluten-free graham cracker crust.
We have used the graham cracker crumbs to make a cheese cake crust and it was to die for!
There are so many ways to eat these graham crackers.
Can they be made dairy free?
Yes they can be made without dairy if needed. in fact, they actually make really delicious dairy-free graham crackers.
When my middle daughter was suffering from eczema and we were changing our diet completely, I would use a dairy free milk alternative in place of the milk. Our favorite was non-flavored almond milk.
In place of the butter you could use either refined coconut oil or a vegan butter. Coconut oil would be the healthier choice between the two. Make sure to get refined coconut oil so that you don’t get a coconut flavor.
I buy a 5 gallon bucket of refined coconut oil on Azure Standard and use it for any frying needs. The refined oil doesn’t have a coconut taste.
What gluten-free flour blend should I use?

There are so many different gluten free all purpose flour blends out on the market. It’s hard to know which ones are the good ones. Or does it even make a difference?
If you have read any of my other posts, on gluten free baking and cooking, you will know I do believe it makes a difference on which blend you are using.
Gluten free flour blends are just that. A blend.
They are made up of many different flours to make a blend that is considered all purpose. There will be blends out there with brown rice flour, white rice flour, almond flour, chick pea flour, etc. Along with starches and a binding agent.
The problem is that each of those grain flours brings their own flavor and texture to the mix. So depending of which flours are being used, will determine the taste in your product.
I find that rice flours make up the best flour blends because they are the most mild in taste.
The best store-bought version of all purpose gluten free flour blend I like is, Cup 4 Cup. I used to buy it on Amazon in a 25lb bag.
Now I make my own flour blend that I make up whenever we run out. I buy all my flours in bulk on Azure Standard and I am able to whip up a batch of all purpose flour in no time. My homemade version is the most like Cup 4 Cup.
I share my flour blend recipe in my digital cookbook.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups gluten free all purpose flour, I use my own homemade blend that I share in my digital cookbook
- 1/4 cup cane sugar
- 3/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp xanthan gum (omit if your blend already has it in it.)
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
- 3 TBSP milk
- 3 TBSP honey
- 2 TBSP molasses
- 1 egg, room temperature
- 5 TBSP softened butter
- 1 TBSP vanilla extract
How to make homemade gluten free graham crackers:
- Place all your dry ingredients into the bowl of a stand mixer and turn on for a second to mix. If you don’t have a stand mixer you can use a large mixing bowl with a hand mixer or a food processor.
- Add honey, milk, molasses, vanilla, egg, and softened butter to the bowl. Mix your dry and wet ingredients together until it forms a dough. Do NOT add more liquid, it will come together with time. If you mixer has been going for over 5 minutes and it still hasn’t came together, you can add a small splash of milk. I have never had to do this though.
- Wrap your dough ball in plastic wrap and place in fridge for 20 minutes or until you are ready to roll it out. I have left it in the fridge for days and then rolled it out!
- Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
- Using a rolling pin, roll dough out in between 2 sheets of plastic wrap or pieces of parchment paper to a 1/4 inch thickness. Use a pizza cutter and cut lines to form squares. You can also use a cookie cutter of choice to make fun shapes!
- Place all your graham crackers on a cookie sheet with about an inch in between. They will not expand or rise hardly at all so you don’t have to give them much space in between each other.
- Bake at 350 degree for about 10 minutes. If you want them to be super crunchy bake a minute or two longer. Place on a cooling rack to cool completely, but leave them on the baking sheet to add a little crunch.
A great snack for everyone.
These homemade gluten free graham crackers taste so much like traditional graham crackers, you won’t even miss the real things. They are a great snack that everyone enjoys.
My girls like them a bit soft, more like a cookie. In order to get this consistency I don’t roll out quite as thin and I make sure to not over bake them.
We like the recipe just as it is, but you could also sprinkle some cinnamon/sugar mixture on top before baking for a little treat.
This is our go-to recipe of gf graham crackers for s’mores. You will often find us building a camp fire in our back yard during the fall, summer, and spring months and these make delicious gluten-free s’mores.
No more missing out on the s’mores for all my gluten free friends out there!
I keep the graham crackers in an air-tight container in the pantry to grab as we want. They will keep for a couple weeks as long as they are in an airtight container and as long as they don’t get eaten too fast.
Now you are ready to go enjoy homemade gluten free graham crackers, with some milk on the side, for your next snack of the day.
