Mullein plants are everywhere. Learning how to make garlic mullein oil has saved me both time and money.

How can garlic mullein oil save me time and money you ask?

This powerful infused mullein garlic oil saves me time and money from heading off to the doctor every time one of the girls has ear pain or an ear infection. A few drops of this oil in an affected ear, usually does the trick.

I started using this oil about 8 years ago, when I heard of it, and I have not been to the doctor since for an ear infection. Staying away from a healthcare provider means no antibiotics when it comes to ear infections!

You can buy a garlic mullein oil on Amazon or at a local health food store. But I choose to make it for 2 reasons. First, I like knowing what is going into our bodies. The only way to truly know what ingredients are in it, is to make it yourself. Second, I have mullein plants all over my property. So making this oil takes next to no time and costs very little.

This garlic mullein ear oil only has 3 ingredients. Knowing where and how I am getting these ingredients is important to me. Plus I always have garlic and olive oil in the pantry. So once I have my plants, I am set to make a powerful ear oil that actually works!

Before we learn how to make a garlic mullein oil, let’s talk about what each of these ingredients does.

Garlic:

A clove of garlic itself isn’t the powerful part. Once you cut fresh garlic up, that’s where the medicinal properties take place. Garlic is known for a natural form of antibiotics because of the allicin that is released when you chop it up. Allicin is the juice that you see once cut.

The allicin contains compounds that are an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and an antioxidant.

Adding garlic to any herbal remedies is a great way to really pack a powerful punch.

I usually grow garlic in my garden but when I run out, I get a big bag of garlic from Azure Standard.

Garlic not only is good in a home remedy, it also would benefit you to eat it on a regular basis. It is known to have cardiovascular benefits, immune support, joint and bone health, along with reducing blood pressure and cholesterol.

All of these benefits are wonderful! However, I would caution not to overdo garlic as too much garlic can cause gastrointestinal issues. Use your best judgement on how often you eat garlic.

Mullein:

Whenever I see a mullein plant, I harvest it. The cool thing about mullein is the entire plant is medicinal. I just use the leaves in this mullein garlic ear oil recipe, but you can also use the flowers. The roots also have good medicinal properties. Each part of the plant has different benefits.

Mullein is known the most for its ability to aid in respiratory health and inflammation. So when I harvest my plant, I am using the mullein leaf for both the garlic mullein oil and also saving back some dried leaves for mullein tea, which is really good when we are struggling with respiratory issues.

Mullein leaves have fine hairs on them, which make them feel fuzzy. This can be an irritant so it is important to properly strain everything, whether a tea or oil, before using.

Dried mullein flowers from your plant can be added to your ear oil or teas for respiratory health, although I usually don’t add them to my garlic mullein oil. But they are also known to be good for topical healing. They are an antiseptic which means they have great benefit in healing burns, wounds, and skin irritations by making a mullein flower oil or salve. Not only can mullein be ingested but it has a topical use as well!

The root of the plant is known for their anti-inflammatory properties. Making a mullein root tea has helped with arthritis and gout, along with nerve pain and jaw pain.

Mullein makes for a great remedy when looking for a natural aid in different ailments. If you live on a farm or have access to property, take a look around and I bet you will be shocked at the mullein plants growing around you that you never noticed before!

Olive Oil:

The primary use of olive oil in this recipe, is to have something to infuse the garlic and mullein into so it goes in the ear easily.

But olive oil is great for softening ear wax as well. When you have packed ear wax in your ear, putting drops of straight olive oil in several days in a row, will help to break it up and soften it to fall out. It can help you maintain good ear health.

There are some medicinal benefits to olive oil. Olive oil is known to help your immune system, along with giving pain relief. Which is why this is a good oil choice for this herbal remedy.

Picking certified organic olive oil will help give you the purest garlic mullein oil. Starting with the right ingredients is the first step to making a pure and great natural remedy that actually works.

Now let’s get to making the oil. This is so simple and will take you no time!

How to make garlic mullein oil.

You will need a small jar and lid to be able to make this infused oil. Once it is infused and strained, you will want to keep your garlic mullein oil in a dropper bottle in a cool dark place to store. That way it is ready to use when you need it!

I like to do the slow process of infused oil. I feel like it makes a more powerful oil that works really well. Which means you want to make this oil up well BEFORE anyone is complaining of an ear ache.

However, I know that isn’t always possible. So if you are in a pinch and stumbled across this post because you have a little one complaining of an ear ache, don’t worry you can get some garlic oil made up in just a few short hours.

I will share both methods below. This batch can easily be doubled, tripled, or quadrupled. Make a big batch and share with you friends and neighbors!

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup dried mullein leaves and/or flowers
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1 cup olive oil

How to make garlic mullein oil:

  1. Chop up your garlic cloves to release the allicin. They do not need to be finely minced just a rough chop is fine. Put them in the bottom of your clean jar.
  2. Add in your dried mullein leaves and/or flowers.
  3. Pour your oil over top.
  4. Cap the jar and lightly shake it to make sure everything is mixed. Store in a cool dry place for 4-6 weeks. When you think of it, give your jar a shake every so often. I like to do it for 6 weeks to get it at it’s optimal peak. Pro tip, write the date on the cap so you don’t forget what day you started the oil.
  5. After it has infused, strain out the oil with a strainer and muslin cloth or cheese cloth. Make sure you get all particles out so that you are only left with the oil. Store your oil in a cool dark place.
  6. When needed, add a few drops of warm oil to the ear infected.

How to make garlic mullein oil fast:

  1. Chop your garlic, like above.
  2. Add everything to a small saucepan. Heat the mixture on low heat allowing it to infuse for about 1-2 hours. Stir it every so often so it doesn’t burn.
  3. Remove it from the heat and let it cool.
  4. Follow steps 5 and 6 above for straining, storage, and use.

These mullein ear drops have been a life saver when it comes to ear aches and ear infections. Whenever I can use a home remedy and stay out of a doctors office, I am all for it!
